2017 - The Year of "Less"

2017 - The Year of "Less"

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you had a lovely holiday season, spent some time relaxing with friends and family and indulged in your favourite holiday treats! Now that it is January, I am sure many of you are making New Year's resolutions or have been inundated with requests to join detoxes, cleanses, or intense workout programs to “get back on track.” This is why I am not a big fan of New Year's resolutions. They usually mean restrictive diets and gyms packed to capacity for a few short weeks but, living a healthy lifestyle is much more than that. My goal for this year is to be nicer to myself and set simple goals outside of diet and exercise and I encourage you to join me in doing the same!

21 Healthy Snack Ideas To Keep You Going All Day!

21 Healthy Snack Ideas To Keep You Going All Day!

I get the question a lot from my clients about what they should be eating for healthy snacks. When creating meal plans, I usually (depending on the goals; digestion state and many other factors relating to the client) add in two snacks a day in between meals in order to balance blood sugar, keep hunger at bay and aid in weight loss (yes, eating more often can aid in weight loss). The most important thing to remember about snacking is being prepared. It is one thing for me to tell my clients to eat every 2-3 hours but without knowing what to eat, this can lead to reaching for the candy bowl mid afternoon. If you prepare snacks, like you would prepare your meals, this will lead to better success and less cravings.

Feeling Peachy!

Feeling Peachy!

One of my favorite things about summer is all the fresh produce we can get locally. Living in Canada makes it a little difficult to eat local year-round, as the temperatures starts to cool off we do not have access to a lot of fresh local produce. This is why I love to take advantage of what we can get in the summer! I love to go to farmer's markets and just browse to see what the farmers are selling that day and try some new things… but at this time of the year, I cannot leave without fresh local berries and peaches! Seriously, it’s nature’s candy!

Are You Addicted to Sugar?

Are You Addicted to Sugar?

I have always had a big sweet tooth. As a kid I was always reaching for some form of candy or chocolate. I would tell my parents I had a separate stomach just for dessert even when I was already full after dinner. Kicking the sugar habit is hard, and trust me, I totally get it. It’s sweet, delicious and it gives our bodies a natural high. In an ideal world, we would only get sugars from whole foods like fruit, but if you like dessert as much as I do, that is sometimes unrealistic. That’s why I recommend using natural sweeteners in moderation. Though sugar is sugar, natural sugars (see list below) are easier for your body to digest and do not spike your blood sugar as easily.
