I get the question a lot from my clients about what they should be eating for healthy snacks. When creating meal plans, I usually (depending on the goals; digestion state and many other factors relating to the client) add in two snacks a day in between meals in order to balance blood sugar, keep hunger at bay and aid in weight loss (yes, eating more often can aid in weight loss). The most important thing to remember about snacking is being prepared. It is one thing for me to tell my clients to eat every 2-3 hours but without knowing what to eat, this can lead to reaching for the candy bowl mid afternoon. One of my favorite things about summer is all the fresh produce we can get locally. Living in Canada makes it a little difficult to eat local year-round, as the temperatures starts to cool off we do not have access to a lot of fresh local produce. I have always had a big sweet tooth. As a kid I was always reaching for some form of candy or chocolate. I would tell my parents I had a separate stomach just for dessert even when I was already full after dinner. Kicking the sugar habit is hard, and trust me, I totally get it. It’s sweet, delicious and it gives our bodies a natural high. It took me years to teach my body not to rely on sugar and stop my cravings, but sometimes my sweet tooth comes back and hits me like a ton of bricks. In an ideal world, we would only get sugars from whole foods like fruit, but if you like dessert as much as I do, that is sometimes unrealistic.
